I only saw Jim in concert once, but I've never forgotten it. It was at S.O.B.'s in lower Manhattan, early '80s, and it was with an all-star band that at least had Bob Moses on drums and I think Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell (can anyone further refresh my memory?). The highlight, though, was the finale of "Witchi Tai To," when an unexpected trumpet was heard in the audience. Jim looked over and was truly surprised to see Don Cherry sitting at a table, playing along with his pocket trumpet. He joined the band onstage, and it was as magical a performance as I've ever heard.

This was awesome to learn about the life of Michael Brecker; what an inspiration including "Tale of the Hudson" and "Don't try this at Home". Thank you Michael and Randy for how wonderful it has been listening to your music for decades. Michael and Randy, to me, are such major contributors to the music world and offer some of the most tasteful sax playing in Jazz.

Over the years I keep coming back and back to Comin' and Goin' and to Witchi Tai To, which refreshes my spirit, uplifts my heart and makes me give thanks and thanks and thanks to the sky, the earth and the heavens.

Every listening to the album opens new corners for enjoyable listening.

You his friends and you his other fans, consider with me how lucky we are we were given ears to hear this music and the technology to hear it whenever we need it.

Thank you for this sit!

TIM,
You must be thinking of the version on the Everything is Everything LP. That's the earliest commercial recording of the song, which came out in 1969. In 1971, Pepper recorded his own first LP, Pepper's Pow Wow, which included both song and chant versions of Witchi Tai To -- so if you're sure of the years, then Everything is Everything is the version you're remembering (that's also the version that got the most airplay and hit the charts coincidentally at #69 in 1969.
